Friend of the Storm gets Pro Coaching Assignment

Matt Weston takes Head Coaching job at
VSI-Tampa Bay FC - USL Pro team in Tampa
Florida.

Santa Clarita Storm would like to congratulate Matt Weston on his appointment to head up the new U.S.L Pro League team out of Tampa Florida. Matt is a good friend of Gerald Brunner - Owner & CEO of United Sports Int & Futbol Club Santa Clarita Storm. The two
met through Doug Peterson who owned New York FC -  a team that operated out of Garden City, NY and had an affiliation with N.Y.F.C to develop players for the pro level. Brunner & Weston struck a relationship that continued after Weston had left N.Y.F.C.  Brunner
learned through social media of the promotion of Weston to take the helm of the Tampa Pro team .

Weston, a former professional player in the UK with Ipswich Town, moved to the U.S. in 2006 to pursue a player/coaching career and has quickly established himself as one of the brightest, young, up-and-coming coaches. Last season Weston led the Ocala Stampede to the PDL Southeast Division title in the club’s inaugural season, and impressed the VSI management with his team performances and entertaining style of play.
“Matt was an obvious choice for us as he best reflected the values we wish to achieve with our newly formed USL PRO team,” said John Mitchell, VSI Head of Operations for North America. “We saw him coach firsthand last season when our PDL team played against Ocala Stampede who, without a doubt, were the standout team in the division.”
“I am excited by the challenge and wonderful opportunity of being named head coach of the VSI Tampa Bay FC USL PRO team for its inaugural season in 2013,” said Weston, 36. “Once I met the ownership group and discussed the long-term vision of VSI, it felt right and I was delighted to accept the position.
“After spending some time in USL PRO in 2011 with FC New York and a very successful season with new PDL franchise the Ocala Stampede this past summer, I was champing at the bit to get back into the pro game. VSI are looking to build for the future, they are forward-thinking with their approach and mirror my philosophy for long-term player development. We will be looking to play a brand of soccer that will excite as well as entertain, and hope that the fans here in Tampa come out to support their new professional team."
